The Wellness Wheel includes four separate quadrants that make up our wellness: Emotional, Mental, Physical, and Spiritual. Every section is equally important and necessary for one’s wellbeing. It is necessary that you ensure all sections are balanced. If they are not, don’t panic. It just means some work needs to be done. Let’s start by assessing your wellbeing.
You do not have to write it down or tell anyone, this is a check-in with yourself.
Emotional
- Is there anything that made you happy today?
- Is there anything worrying you? If so, put it away. You cannot change the future or the past, you must live in the now.
Mental
- Is there anything challenging you? Be grateful, for you will be made wiser because of it.
Physical
- Did you eat today?
- Will you exercise today?
- Did you sleep well last night?
Spiritual
- What do you have to be grateful for?
- How do you express your gratitude?
Draw out your own Wellness Wheel on a piece of paper. Take a moment to assess each quadrant of your personal wellbeing. In each quadrant, rate that aspect of your wellness on a scale from one to ten (1 being low, 10 being high) on how you have felt this past week. After writing down your numbers, draw a curved line in each segment indicating the number (Ex. If you wrote down a 3, draw the line 3/10s of the way from the center). After doing this you should have a visual guide to see your balance and where some quadrants may be lacking. Any quadrant that has a 5 or less, you should note down (written or mentally) two or three things that you can do to better that quadrant.
This is a fun activity to do regularly, either by yourself or with your family or kids. For little ones, asking them some guided questions can really help them think about their feelings. Older kids might enjoy using a visual tool like a wheel to express themselves. To make it even more engaging, grab a paper plate and sketch out the different sections for a hands-on experience!
What’s on Your Plate?
Using a paper plate or a drawn circle, take time to divide the circle with each wedge being dedicated to a responsibility in your life. The most important part is to assess if you are overwhelmed and are leaving space for yourself. Around the outer rim of the plate/circle you can write “Unforeseen Circumstances” as those are a part of life that none of us can control.
